The accident, which happened at about 5.10pm at the junction with Agricultural Hall Plain, has been described as a “major road traffic accident” by First Buses whose vehicle was involved.

The bus, a 25A heading towards the railway station, had to be lifted by fire crews to free the woman who was trapped underneath it. The windscreen was smashed by the impact.

She has now been taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with a “serious lower leg injury”, according to police.

The crash has been causing hold-ups for rush-hour traffic in the city with buses re-routed along Magdalen Street and Palace Street.

A spokesman for First Bus Group said: “We are aware of the incident at 5.10pm this evening in Norwich at the Prince of Wales Road and Tombland junction. Our 25A service travelling towards the railway station was involved in a road traffic accident involving a pedestrian.

“We are co-operating with local police inquiries and First Bus management are completing an internal investigation.”

Passengers on the bus were interviewed by police investigating what had happened.

A fire service spokesmen said crews had released one person, and crews left the scene just after 6pm.

Norfolk police are currently at the scene carrying out preliminary investigations, including testing the traffic and pedestrian lights and photographing the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call Pc Phil Higgins on 101.
