People stepping off trains at Great Yarmouth station can hop straight onto bikes thanks to a new pedal scheme.
The ‘Bike & Go’ initiative, the UK’s first major train station cycle hire programme, was launced by Yarmouth MP Brandon Lewis today.
Abellio Greater Anglia said the bike scheme offers travellers low cost, rapid and convenient cycle rental across 15 of its stations. It is modelled on the Dutch Railways OV-fiets station cycle hire scheme.
To use the bikes, passengers must register and pay a £10 annual subscription, plus the daily hire cost of £3.80.
Andrew Goodrum, Abellio Greater Anglia’s customer service director, said, “Great Yarmouth’s new Bike & Go facility will improve the service and choice that we provide for our customers who are keen to cycle to and from their local station. Competitively priced and easy to use, Bike & Go complements other investments we are making to improve cycle parking with more secure facilities and new cycle points, offering a greener and healthier travel choice for our customers.”
Mr Lewis said: “This will allow residents and visitors alike to see our town on two wheels, making more of their visit while keeping fit and reducing their impact on the environment.
“This is just one of the many improvements in the pipeline for our train station and I look forward to trying one of the bikes myself.”
