Paralympic archer Mel Clarke will take centre stage this evening at Norwich’s Christmas lights switch on.

Christmas lights entertainment

Chapelfield Gardens:

5pm to 8.30pm. Beautiful trees in the gardens will be lit with pinks, blues and greens.

6pm to 6.30pm. The Hellesdon and Sprowston Brass Band in the bandstand.

6.15pm. The lantern procession will leave Chapelfield Gardens making its way to The Forum with lanterns made by Henderson Green Primary School and The Hewett School, joined by Father Christmas on his magical sleigh.

The Forum:

Festivities at The Forum from 6pm to 8.30pm will include a food and drink market, street entertainment and a traditional Spanish Christmas dance and music performed by the Hewett School.

Around the city:

6.15pm to 7.15pm. Snow machines at Davey Place outside Virgin Lounge

6pm to 8pm. Rock Choir on Davey Place outside Virgin Lounge

6.15pm to 7.15pm. Bignold School choir on Gentleman’s Walk (outside LloydsTSB)

6.45pm to 7.30pm. Hellesdon and Sprowston Brass Band on Hay Hill

The main event, including the switch-on, fireworks a giant snowball throw and carols, will take place tonight at 7pm.

But the entertainment will begin from 6.15pm around The Forum, Jarrold department store, Chapelfield Gardens and on the steps of City Hall.

The festivities will mean a number of roads will be closed throughout the evening and motorists have been urged to avoid the city centre.

Upper St Giles Street will be closed from 4pm, while Bethel Street and St Peters Street will shut from 5pm.

After the switch-on celebrations will continue at the Forum. The family entertainment includes ukulele strummers, a lantern parade, Father Christmas and fairies.

The event has been organised by Norwich City Council and is supported by the Norwich Evening News, BBC Radio Norfolk The Forum Trust, Jarrold and Virgin Money.

A lantern procession, made by Henderson Green Primary School and The Hewett School, will leave Chapelfield Gardens at 6.15pm, making its way to The Forum, joined by Father Christmas on his sleigh.

Chermond Gymnastics Club, the Norwich Ukulele Society, and Demi Semitone and Swank’s Frolicking Fairies will also join in with a Christmas reading from The Rev Janet Wyer.

I've already planned my evening , in front of a log fire with a glass of decent red wine. I was supposed to be at a longstanding event in the city , however that's all changed as the council has helpfully decided to close most of the few roads still open. All this so that a few lowbrows can stand and gawp at electricity flowing through lightbulbs - it beggars belief.
