Wordsmiths, toastmasters and speechmakers take note – a town crier is looking for your help in writing a competition-winning cry as he takes on the world.

Mike Wabe, from Thetford, is headed to Chester in August to take on all-comers from as far afield as South Africa and Canada in the Town Crier World Championships.

Having qualified earlier this year, the 63-year-old now needs to come up with a cry based on the subject of “law and order” – and he wants EDP readers’ help in writing it.

He explains: “The proclamation must be more than 100 words, but with a maximum of 125 words. It must start Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! and end with God Save the King, so that means there is a maximum of 118 words to play with.

“It need not be limited to strict historical fact; and can be entirely invented; as long as it is an announcement relating to law and order, it will be acceptable. But it must be in the form of an announcement; a retrospective summary of, say, ‘Peculiar laws of the past’ is not what I am looking for.

“I will be adopting a stance from a certain point in history (pre-1900) to inform or remind my listeners of a specific matter or matters of law and order, in the present tense. This may well include reference to the penalties for non-compliance, such as the stocks, pillory, ducking stool or scold’s bridle.”

Proclamations are encouraged to include “wit and imagination”, according to Mr Wabe, but must be suitable for a family-friendly event.

The closing date for entries is Thursday, July 10.

Mr Wabe, who is town crier for Thetford and Brandon, will pick the winner. They will then be given their proclamation printed on to parchment paper.

Send your entries, with your full contact details, to or post them to Thetford’s Great Information Centre, Belmont House, 20 King Street, Thetford IP24 2AP.
