The traditional cheers and hiss and boo of pantomime filled a north Norfolk village hall at the weekend - as the curtain went up on an idea which began over a pint in the local pub.

Plans were hatched at the White Horse pub at Overstrand as it looked to bolster fundraising efforts for its charity of the year, Nelson’s Journey which supports bereaved children in Norfolk .

It resulted in Sindohella - an original pantomime penned by director Maggie Midgley, a retired teacher on the fundraising committee.

Originally planned a ‘for one night only’ the production sold out so quickly that a second night was arranged and also sold out.

For many of the cast this was their first venture onto the stage but under the careful and patient directorship of Mrs Midgley the enthusiastic audience hailed the show as a complete success.

White Horse owner Darren Walsgrove said: “I am delighted. I haven’t laughed so much for ages. It really was one of the best things I have seen for a long time”

The pantomime featured Lindsey Simpson in the title role and involved about 25 other villagers. Other roles included Gary Bartlett and Roger Kimp as the Ugly Sisters, Geoff Turner as the Wicked Baron, and four Fairy Godmothers Mick Murphy, Linda Irving, Martin Havell and Nick Claridge.

It is hoped the show, in the parish rooms, will have raised about £900 towards the charity. It is the first of a series of fundraising events which include a charity car wash, a Made in Overstrand crafts and local produce show, and the ever-popular Christmas sing-a-long.
