Details of dozens of schemes to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in communities across the region can be revealed today.

A total of 37 community groups, parish councils, choirs, history groups and housing associations, in villages, towns and in Norwich have, between them, received thousands of pounds to fund local projects to honour the fallen. Many of the schemes will see decaying memorials restored to their former glory, while others will even see new monuments built.

The money comes from the Norfolk Armed Forces Community Covenant Board, which is administered by the Norfolk Community Foundation. The grants have been announced at the start of the Armed Forces Week, and with little over a month to go before the 100th anniversary of the start of the war.

Among the projects to benefit are:

- plans by Bracon Ash and Hethel Parish Council to transform a redundant telephone box into an information kiosk;

- a weekend concert in Great Snoring, with another in Sheringham;

- memorial gardens in Bowthorpe;

- exhibitions in West Walton and Wacton;

refurbishment of memorials in, among other locations, Burgh Castle, Burnham Market, Docking, Fakenham and Norwich;

- a new monument in Mattishall.

The grants total £10,000. George Nobbs, leader of Norfolk County Council, said: 'The strong interest in this funding... demonstrates the strong solidarity of all throughout Norfolk.'

Tony Tomkinson, Norfolk's Armed Forces Commissioner, said: 'By giving local groups money to plan their own projects we will

ensure we commemorate World War One in a truly meaningful way to create a lasting legacy for generations to come.'
