Families will have the chance to go on a pirate adventure at Highball Climbing Centre in Norwich on Monday.
The family fun day is offering free climbing for junior members as the centre celebrates its first year since opening in Twickenham Road, off Fifers Lane.
The former derelict industrial unit is now home to nearly 500sqm of bouldering walls and a seven and a half metre climbing tower.
Climber Mike Surtees, of Marlborough Road, Norwich, and his neighbour at the time, osteopath Phil Mortimer, who now lives in Stalham, first discussed the idea to develop the climbers’ playground over Christmas drinks back in 2010.
Mr Surtees said the fun day will allow them to celebrate a successful first year which has seen around 20,000 people visit the climbing centre and over 2,000 people register as members.
It is young climbers the centre is hoping to get involved mainly though, as Mr Surtees says most of its sessions are for adults and there are places available in junior classes.
He also feels that climbing in Norwich is growing in popularity, with climbing also available at open in Norwich and the UEA Sportspark, saying: “The British Mountaineering Council recently said that climbing is one of only four sports which isn’t declining in participation,” Mr Surtees added.
“So that is a really positive message we are trying to get out there, especially now in Norwich, which didn’t have much before.”
The open day will also feature 50pc off the price of all family taster sessions and inductions and discounts on its autumn junior programme.
“We have got a pirate theme for the day and our staff will be dressed as pirates,” Mr Surtees said. “We will have plenty of staff working on the day and will be running lots of climbing sessions, pretty much every half-hour, so people can come in at any time and we will be able to get them set up pretty quickly.
“We will have cupcakes, face painting, climbing games and non-climbing games for those who aren’t keen on climbing.
“We’ve also got the Highball Clinic on site with four rooms and will have a reflexologist who can maybe look after the mums.”
