An organised litter pick in Southwold saw a quarter of a ton of rubbish collected.

John Huggins, along with 15 other people, scoured the banks of the Blyth Estuary from Southwold to Blythburgh on Saturday, April 28.

Among the most common finds were hundreds of sticks from cotton buds alongside the remains of helium ballons including the ribbons and plastic ties, with nearly a quarter of a ton of rubbish collected in total.

Each couple was given a different section of the estuary, with one participant even finding his own, previously lost handheld radio, and another finding messages in a bottle.

Mr Huggins said: 'We all had great satisfaction in doing this, looking back at a clean area and seeing the pile of plastic waste now removed from the natural environment of the Blyth Estuary.

'Litter is a big bug bear of mine and it disgusts me and I know it does a lot of people.

'I am sure it is only a minority of people who do discard plastic, but people should just think about the plastic waste that you are discarding as it is hurting the earth and we all need to do something about it.'
