A rail excursion business that launched its first trip from a crowded North Walsham station platform in 1982 is celebrating its 30th birthday.

North East Norfolk Travellers Association (Nenta) Traintours has spent three decades taking passengers on charter trains, day trips and holidays.

It is run by Ray Davies, who said the first excursion, from North Walsham to York and back, cost 8.50 per person.

Since the charter trains began, funds have been raised for numerous projects along the Sheringham to Norwich Bittern Line, including the supply of station flower tubs and hanging baskets, the provision of station seats and literature advertising the line.

The work has continued, financed through on-board raffles held during most Nenta trips. Stations currently supplied with flower displays include North Walsham, Hoveton and Wroxham and Gunton.

A twice-yearly donation is also made to Reepham station, with hanging baskets supplied at Attleborough, Thetford and Ely stations.

Mr Davies said: 'Nenta Traintours has been a success story, with the occasional through train from Holt via the North Norfolk Railway, in addition to serving the majority of East Anglian stations with charter trains, day trips to London and short breaks and holidays, utilising normal Greater Anglia service trains - which contribute many thousands of pounds in revenue to our local train operator.

He said he hoped to continue his work 'for the foreseeable future', and for the 'enjoyment of all rail passengers'.
