The eBay auction for a former RAF station has been extended after no successful bids were put in for the 25-acre site.

RAF Neatishead, which was the eyes and ears of the country’s defence during the Cold War, was put on the online auction website for a knockdown price of £2.5m.

Birmingham-based Stylespace bought the land off the RAF in 2006 for £4m.

One bid of £2.5m was made on the auction site by an individual but was withdrawn because the people behind the sale were not convinced they had “sufficient proof of funding”, according to agent Nick Barlow.

Mr Barlow, from midlands-based Barlow Associates, said today: “We had an awful lot of interest and people wanted more time to do due diligence so we have extended the bidding time to February 28 on eBay. We need to be confident that funding is in place. You have got to be sure a person will cough up the money.

“I’m confident a sale will materialise. It is cracking site but needs somebody with the imagination to develop it.”

RAF Neatishead opened in June 1941 and played a key role in monitoring Britain’s skies in the 1960s as a radar station until it was decommissioned in 2006.

It contains an underground bunker from the Cold War years which was one of the 16 buildings included on the empty plot.

The RAF still carries out communication work for aircraft on a small part of the site and an RAF Defence Air Radar Museum was established on the site 14 years ago, which was not for sale.

Mr Barlow said last week that the site has been on the market for more than two years and that the price had been reduced “substantially”.
