A single spree of criminal damage sent Cromer’s crime figures for the last six weeks soaring ahead of the same period last year, the town council was told on Monday.
PCSO Alison Holmes told members that there had 61 crimes in the 41 days from March 5 to April 14 - compared with 49 in the same period in 2010.
She said: “It included 22 of criminal damage other, which is unheard of. You might be aware of a spate of damage we had going along Overstrand Road and Norwich Road.
“There were 20 relating to damage to garden walls and another five of vehicle damage - all in one night. Without those, we would be reporting 36 crimes.”
● Town mayor Yvonne Nolan, who is stepping down as a councillor next month after 12 years, thanked members and officials for their support.
She said: “I think it’s always nice that the honour can be shared around members. Different people have different ideas.
“I’ve enjoyed my time on the council very much, but as one chapter closes so another one opens. We are expecting our first grandchild shortly.
“To those retiring from Cromer Town Council I thank you for your assistance and those of you coming up for election, the very best of luck.”
Supporters of Scottish champions Celtic are in Norwich ahead of the Adam Drury testimonial game tonight.

It is hardly a shock to read this news as you never see police in Cromer these days, be it on foot or in a car. This will only get worse with the frontline cuts made by the Tory and Lib-Dem government. I imagine that all those in North Norfolk who voted Lamb and got tory dont feel very happy at the moment.

This isn't unique to Cromer - crime around the country has been rising for several months and will only get worse with police cuts planned by the Lib DemTory government.
