Double Olympic champion Laura Trott cycled to victory at Elveden this weekend as she competed against cyclists from across the region.
Miss Trott took the top spot in the 35-mile ladies’ race yesterday (Saturday), beating second place by five minutes, and put the men to the test in their 31-mile race, where she finished with the main group.
The day of racing saw cyclists from across East Anglia and as far as north-east Lincolnshire battle it out around a five kilometre closed-road circuit on the Elveden Estate in Suffolk.
Organiser Ken Jolliffe said he believed Miss Trott, who won gold in both the team pursuit and omnium in the velodrome at London 2012 and became one of the golden girls of the summer’s Games, chose Elveden as she was due to give a presentation in London.
“She showed why she’s a double Olympic champion and rode away from the rest and won by five minutes,” he said. “Winning on your own is something quite spectacular.
“It was very good and she spoke to people and signed autographs and seemed quite happy. I think the competitors value the course and the race but she did draw quite a few in.”
This is the first year the races have taken place on the heart of the estate and yesterday’s events were the third in the series, which began in March.
Two more are set to take place before the end of June.
Around 320 riders took part this weekend, including 30 in the under 16 and 30 in the under 14 event.
Mr Jolliffe added that the course was attractive to competitors because it was unique in the area.
“Normally you can race on the open road but obviously you get traffic. On the estate there’s farm traffic but it’s controlled and it’s very light so it’s like racing on a closed circuit,” he said.
“The nearest others are two in London, three with the Olympic park, and the next nearest one is up in Manchester so we’ve got nothing in Norfolk or Suffolk which is a dedicated place.”
