Mulbarton Junior School shook off its previous rating after Ofsted inspectors noted the “outstanding leadership” of head David Oldham.

The report stated: “His relentless drive for improving pupils’ progress through high quality teaching has had an immense impact.”

Mr Oldham, who joined the school in 2011, said: “We were really pleased with it. At a time when Norfolk’s schools are facing negativity in the national press it is nice to have some good news to celebrate.”

Mr Oldham added that he was particularly pleased with the line which said “pupils thoroughly enjoy learning and respond very positively to their teachers’ high expectations”.

“We expect the children to work hard in lessons and I am really pleased that it was acknowledged,” he said.

The leadership roles that teachers give to students, such as eco-warrior and roles on the school council, were noted as being important.

The report said: “They take their responsibilities seriously and particularly like being a ‘reading buddy’ to the younger pupils.”

To improve, teachers must make sure they “identify and share with pupils what they are expected to have learned by the end of the lesson”.

The school must also ensure that the role of senior leaders is strengthened. Mr Oldham said: “We know the areas we need to work on. There are always things you need to work and we want these pointed out to us. We are very pleased with the report.”
