He’s laughed about it being an easy job for more than 15 years.
But bank manager Steve Burton could be in for a surprise on Tuesday when he takes control of a class of young children.
Mr Burton has always teased his wife Mandy about how easy her nursery job is, but now he has been challenged to spend a day in her shoes, while raising money for charity.
The resources operations manager is used to helping 500 Barclays banks and is confident he’ll easily be able to work with 15 young children at Loddon Nursery School from 7.45am – 4pm.
Mr Burton, 51, said: “There’s been an ongoing joke that the job is all fun and games. I am coming in for a play and think it’ll be a lovely day.”
This week he was introduced to the children for the first time, and heard plans for a day of messy activities.
“It is going to be a walk in the park, I think it will be a doddle,” he said.
Mrs Burton, 47, said the joke has always been that she has no stress and spends all of her days messing around with toys, but she expects her husband will be in for a shock.
“I expect he will find it really hard, but he will say to me that it was easy,” she said.
As well as hoping to prove a point, Mr Burton is being sponsored to raise money after being chosen as a volunteer for Caudwell Children’s Destination Dreams initiative.
The children’s charity organises a seven-day trip to Disneyworld Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses in early December.
Mr Burton and his son Sam, 21, have both been chosen as volunteers to help the children, but need to raise £1,000 each to pay for the trip.
He said: “When you are sat at your desk thinking you are having a bad day, you should just see these poor children.”
Barclays are matching what Mr Burton raises and the nursery have also agreed hold a week of fund-raising.
Sam, who studies at UCS and works three days at schools in Beccles, is running the Norwich half marathon.
