A mother’s visit to see relatives in Finland inspired the creation of Norwich’s latest retail enterprise.
Donna Quinn opened the city’s first indoor car boot sale in Trafalgar Street at the same time as working at a petrol station in the city.
The 34-year-old, who lives in Norwich, opened the Bring ‘n’ Buy secondhand shop after getting the idea following a visit to an indoor flea whilst on a trip to see family in Finland a few years ago.
The store is divided into 60 cubicles, which people can rent on a weekly basis, and can leave their priced-up wares for shoppers to buy. Sellers do not have to supervise their stall once they go on display.
Mrs Quinn, whose parents ran the Bring & Buy secondhand furniture shop in Woodcock Road, Norwich, in the 1980s, said she decided to set up her own enterprise when her children started school.
The businesswoman, who has a nine-year-old daughter, Reese, and five-year-old son, Liam, also does night shifts at the Sainsbury’s petrol station at Longwater whilst she gets the business off the ground.
“I have always liked car boot sales and I have always wanted to have a shop, but I did not know what to do. My husband’s family live in Finland and I went to one of their indoor flea markets and I was really surprised by all the different things and it was really like an indoor car boot, which is where I got the idea from. I do not think there are any other places in Norwich like this - you never know what you might find,” she said.
The store, next to the Lakenham Creamery, rents out a stall for £10 a week or £15 a week for a larger space. Any items not sold at the end of the week can be taken home by the seller or can stay at the store with profits being split 50/50.
Mrs Quinn, who is helped at the shop by her mother Yvonne and friends and family, added: “The shop is pretty much full, but a lot of people still do not realise what we are all about and do not know we are here.” “It has been a bit of a struggle, but I have really enjoyed it and hopefully it will take off once people know we are here.”
Bring ‘n’ Buy is open Tuesdays to Sundays. For more information, call 01603 611234.
