Holidaymakers from East Anglia have been handed a Mediterranean boost with the announcement of a new sunshine destination from Norwich International Airport.

Thomson and First Choice have combined to announce that in summer 2015 they will be increasing capacity by introducing a new route to Mahon, Menorca. The plans for summer 2015 also include the addition of a further weekly flight for existing route Dalaman, Turkey.

The move is part of the tour operator’s strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport. The new route went on sale on the 24th April.

By adding the extra flight to Dalaman, customers flying from Norwich will now be able to choose varying durations in Turkey - not just the standard seven and 14 night stays.

Andrew Bell, chief executive of Norwich Airport, said: “Our objective is to provide an ever increasing range of top quality holiday destinations and product to the holidaymakers in our region. Working closely with Thomson and First Choice, we are making good progress in achieving this.”

  • Train to Southend airport means atleast one change , tried to book a ticket in mid september cheapest 43:50 return, with atleast a 2hr 30 min train ride, no thanks. Stansted or even Luton is a much easier option if your going to use a different airport

  • Our flight to Turkey this year had to be changed to Stansted. The result will be a Minibus bill of £230 return. £40 from Norwich Airport seems good value. (The tour operator has offered to cover part off the fare).

  • We have been using Southend for the last 18 months for our regular flights to Faro. Just over 2 hours from Norwich by train which takes you right to the terminal door. Return fare to Southend costs less than £30 if you book early enough. No petrol costs, no parking fees and no ADT so you're quids in all round. Plus you have a carefree and leisurely journey there & back. Brand new and modern airport terminal with good facilities & a lot less hassle than Stansted, Luton or other London Airports.

  • I'm an advocate for regional airports but a major critic of the airport tax, which most airports don't have! I'd like to see a plan to remove this tax, flights to Exeter and Dublin and packaged holidays via Amsterdam at competitive prices. Sadly, when we flew Flybe to Dublin a few years back the flight was only half full, so not likely to be viable. Taxing customers to make more money is down to a poor strategy. Could do better I feel..

  • OK a tenner is a pain but as mentioned offset it with all the add ons for flying from elsewhere. Does not phase me much except I really see no improvement, can anyone enlighten me... When we fly to the USA we alway go from Norwich to Amsterdam and getting the 0615 flight is a bonus as the Airport does not open till 0530. Would like a bit of competition with KLM though.

  • Just to add for the person saying you can't select seats because Germania operate the route for Thomson, from 2015 although Germania are still doing it you will be able to select seats prior to your flight! Good to see people have the common sense and realize it is much more convenient.

  • I'm a big fan of Norwich Airport. The development tax might seem a bit cheeky, but as somebody else stated, saving a couple of hours travelling each way tofrom Stansted, plus the fuel and parking and the extra levy does seem almost like a no brainer. It is something called convenience and it's the reason why we often go to the local store for a pint of milk instead of driving to the big supermarket, which is cheaper. I'm glad to see that Norwich Airport is starting to offer more variety. I would still like to see more routes offered, even if it was via a larger hub airport.

  • Norwich airport is great and whenever we can always try to use it rather than the others like Stansted, Luton and Gatwick. Hopefully more destinations and choice will come. Even with the addtional Airport Tax Norwich is more convenient and sometimes cheaper than the others.

  • Good to see some new routes being opened up, even if they are reinstated. Why do people whinge about the airport duty. Sure its an inconvenience. If it was absorbed into the ticket price they would never know it existed. Without having to pay the transport costs or petrol to Gatwick or Heathrow and having to park a car for the duration of the holiday, and possibly pay for a hotel for the night in order to catch an early flight £10 is peanuts. I agree that some of the Flybe routes are ridiculous. In order to fly to Exeter you have to go via Manchester and pay for two flights each way plus a journey that takes hours. People need to wise up to the fact that, via Amsterdam, you can fly almost anywhere from Norwich. They need to publicise this more just as the improved Southend airport is doing, and offer deals. As for airport improvements what do people want? When I first started to use the airport to fly via Air Anglia the facilities were little more that ex-RAF sheds.

  • Great news. I was hoping it would be MALAGA though! I still find it bizarre that the Norwich airport haters on here would rather pay £100+ in fuel and parking to fly from Stansted rather than pay the ADF, as a matter of principle. Each to their own though!

  • Responsible parent. Just look at the other comments and you will see just how hated the extortion racket called the airport tax really is, or is that beyond your capabilities ? Perhaps Bell would like to tell us what it is being spent on, with evidence ?.

  • As SL says its not new it's reinstated, but good to see for all that, we like Menorca but would'nt travel from any other airport other than the convenience of Norwich, so it's been Majorca for the last 3 years. yes the tax is "annoying" but so is the time and cost of travelling to Stanstead or Luton, horses for courses as to whether you prefer the convenience or the bigger choice of routes, but for us Norwich wins every time, roll on June when we use it again.

  • On Friday the EDP were advertising flights to various places including Belfast. Goody, I thought they must have put Belfast back on. But no, the flights go via Manchester, Glasgow or Amsterdam!!! How ridiculous is that and you're talking 3 or 5 hours to get there. Total madness.

  • I fly to Spain at least twice a year and would love to fly from Norwich, which they used to fly to 9 years ago so I have to pay for fuel and parking at Luton or Stansted.

  • I'm not actually. I'm a pilot for Ryanair from Stansted airport. End of the day whether people like it or not the airport has found it's niche, offering it's domestic flights to Aberdeen, Manchester and Edinburgh, plus Amsterdam and then offering summer sun flightspackage holidays. They are all running with high Load Factors and have increased recently after many years of decline. Lets be honest Ryanair or Easyjet will never come to Norwich because it is commercially not viable. Thomson have had to use Germania due to the cost of basing their own aircraft and crews, so it's cheaper to get another airline in to operate it. With Norwich's first part of it's aviation park being approved you will find this will be where the airport see's it's future, not so reliant for low cost flights as their isn't the catchment at Norwich, Flybe in 2004 came to Norwich even before the tax was introduced, they offered flights to mainland Spain, Portugal and services to Dublin, Belfast and Paris, but local people didn't use them then and this was before this tax was introduced, so anybody expecting lots of destinations and low cost flights will be disappointed, The airport has found it's niche and is doing better for it. So stop complaining and travel to a different airport if you don't like it.

  • Wrong side of Norwich? Not for me and once the NDR semi-bypass is complete is in an ideal location. However, holidays flying from here are significantly more expensive plus the airport tax and minimal destinations to go to, Stansted is often a better option. Oh. What have they spent the extra tax on anyway?

  • Sadly for all you ignorant folk, Norwich's destination's now do very well, all summer sun ones are fully booked most days, domestic ones are very well used, KLM's Amsterdam traffic goes from strength to strength, because most people have the intelligence to work out that even though they pay £10 to fly from Norwich which is local, they save that by not traveling down to Stansted, Luton, Heathrow in fuel alone etc, so lets all get over it, it's not going anywhere nor is the airport, and the fact that the airport saw a 16.8% INCREASE in passengers last year tells it all really.

  • I doubt whether NIA will be here in 1015 years time. It's an excuse for an airport. The wrong side of Norwich with very poor transport links (especially no rail), poor destinations with the ridiculous airport tax to boot. Sell it for housing, build a new one linked to the southern bypass and rail.
