The skies above Norwich might have been grey and overcast but beneath there were sizzling temperatures and an explosion of scintillating home-grown tastes as six butchers battled it out for the coveted ‘best banger’ title.

Thousands of people descended on the Forum on Saturday for the much loved Battle of the Bangers contest – part of the 10th EDP Adnams Spire Norfolk Food and Drink Festival – which sees the public help crown the best butcher after having had the chance to try the carefully crafted pork products.

And the public were in for a treat with seven different sausages to sample which kept the punters coming and the butchers and their staff busy cooking and promoting their products throughout the day.

Sarah de Chair, EDP Adnams Spire Norfolk Food and Drink Festival chairman, helps organise the competition which is always one of the highlights of the festival.

She said: “We’ve had lots of people trying the sausages and new for this year we’ve got a beef sausage from The Beefsmith at Starston. “Tavern Tasty Meats have come back this year to defend their title because they won two years ago and weren’t allowed to take part last year.

“The lovely thing is that we’ve met so many people who actually came here in their prams several years ago and who are voting themselves this year.”

Peter Waters, brand manager for Visit Norfolk, said the event was “fantastic for tourism” and said both the city and county needed more events like this.

The public voted for Cromer and Sheringham-based Icarus Hines as this year’s victor, in his first appearance, with Tavern Tasty Meats the runner-up.

Bradwell Butchery was the winner of the sponsors’ choice competition, with Icarus Hines the runner-up. Also taking part were The Fruitpig company, Bradwell Butchery, FL Edge and Son, Icarus Hines, The Beefsmith and Tavern Tasty Meats.
