A Norwich charity which helps vulnerable young people and adults is looking to expand its service - but needs help from the public to raise £20,000.

The Base Community Trust opened in April last year as a partnership between The Hewett School, Parkside Special School and Barnardo’s, but became a charity in its own right this year.

With a centre at The Hewett School site, off Cecil Road, the charity helps young people and adults through services such as youth clubs and adult learning.

But the charity is hoping to expand and has launched an appeal to raise £20,000.

Joanna Tuttle, company secretary of The Base, said: “We have reached an exciting point where we can see the potential to support many more young people in the local area, however to do this we need to raise further funds and as most charities are aware this is not easy at the moment.”

The charity employs two part-time youth workers and has raised £5,000 towards bringing in a full-time youth worker. But Emma Blake, centre manager, said: “We hope to raise a further £20,000 to enable us to meet the needs of more young people who experience a wide range of challenges in their lives - from low self-confidence to coping with self-harm, or to an unsettled home life due to unemployment or low income in the family.”

Norwich City Football Club chief executive David McNally is a trustee of the charity and recently hosted a business breakfast at Carrow Road to highlight the charity’s work.

The charity will be holding a “bucket collection” at Carrow Road next Tuesday night before the Canaries’ Capital One Cup clash with Aston Villa.

Anyone who can help the charity should email thebasenorwich@gmail.com or call 01603 463121.
