The team at the Chelsea branch on Red Lion Street launched its Charity Choices initiative last month by choosing local good causes to benefit from a share of the donation in time for the festive season.

The chosen three charities were put to a public vote, with customers and members of the public invited into the branch to vote for their favourite during a two week period.

The number of votes received by each charity determined their share of the donation.

As a result of the vote, Nelsons Journey received £500, Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue £300 and Cathy Fiddy Foundation £200.

Karen Griffith, manager of the Norwich branch, said: “All the votes have been counted and verified and we’re absolutely delighted to be sharing £1,000 between three local charities in time for Christmas.

“The three charities we chose to support provide invaluable services to our local community and we felt it was important that the decision on the amount of money received by each was placed in the hands of local people.

“I’d like to thank everyone who voted and I’m sure these donations will make a real difference locally.”

The Charity Choices initiative was rolled out across all of the building society’s 35 branches, with a total of £35,000 from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, of which Chelsea Building Society is a part, being shared between more than 100 charities and good causes in the last month.

The Charitable Foundation is funded by the Society’s Small Change, Big Difference scheme, where members donate just the pennies from the interest they receive on their Yorkshire accounts to make a big pot of money.

Members are then invited to nominate charities important to them to receive support.
