A Norwich chapel has conducted its first same-sex marriage – believed to be the first performed in a place of worship in Norfolk since changes in the law.

Lorelei Michelle Surrey and Zoe-Anne Wadey, from Halesworth, were married at Octagon Unitarian Chapel on Colegate in Norwich on Saturday.

The union between two men or two women was made law in March this year. Conducted by Judith Farmer, one of four authorised people able to conduct marriages at the Octagon, the day was the culmination of many months of hard work by the chapel.

Mrs Farmer, 58, from Norwich, said: “I am delighted to have been part of the day. Everyone found it so moving.”

And according to the chapel, the number of weddings held there has grown hugely in the past few years.

A wedding fair was held in it last year to promote the beautiful building as a venue for their special day.

On the wedding, the chair of Octagon Unitarian Chapel Trustees, Bruce Chilton, said: “This delivers the equality that we so strongly believe in.”
