Dr. Mark Felton has successfully crafted a career out of researching and writing about military history, with his other works including Zero Night: The Untold Story of World War Two’s Most Daring Great Escape and The Real Tenko: Extraordinary True Stories of Women Prisoners of the Japanese.

The latest book by the 42-year-old father-of-one is Castle of the Eagles: Escape from Mussolini’s Colditz.

The gripping story was written using official documents and personal memoirs, and follows a group of British and Commonwealth officers being held prisoner in an ‘escape-proof’ war camp on the personal order of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Dr. Felton said: “I read The Colditz Story when I was 12 and it stayed with me. I often wondered whether other castles had been used as POW camps, and I dug around a bit.

“I started turning up references to British generals being held in an Italian castle, and launching escapes, and I instantly knew that this story needed to be told fully for the first time.”

Film rights for the book have already been snapped up by Entertainment One films who are currently working on an adaptation.
