Diners in Norwich's clubland have more variety to choose from with two Indian restaurants back in Prince Of Wales Road, after Chutney opened at a former takeaway business in the street.

Chutney's owner Mohammed Ali hopes to tap into the same clientele that has made the Spice Lounge in nearby Tombland a success, and said he was offering a different restaurant concept to the Prince of India in Prince of Wales Road.

He has run restaurants before, mainly on the outskirts of Norwich, and also runs an Indian restaurant takeaway near the Heartsease pub roundabout in Norwich.

He said: 'I have been looking for a restaurant to run in the centre of Norwich for quite a while. My main target area was Tombland, so this is not far away.

'I think there's space for two Indian restaurants in Prince Of Wales Road and a huge gap in the market. I don't think anyone is providing what diners in the road need or want.

'I'm looking to bring in the same customers that go to the Spice Lounge. That includes corporate customers, Aviva staff, students and young professionals.'

He said the restaurant would offer a healthier approach to Indian cooking and serve a mix of Bengali and Punjabi cuisine.

Chutney's premises formerly housed a fast food takeaway, a fish and chips shop, and, before that, an estate agent and architect. Before Mr Ali took it on, it had been closed for several years and boarded-up.

The Raj Villa Indian restaurant in Prince of Wales Road closed a few years ago.
