A pioneering group of Norwich City supporters, who set up the Proud Canaries lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender supporters group, will keep the green flag flying high at today’s England Euro 2016 qualifier.

Proud Canaries was launched at Carrow Road in February, becoming just the second officially recognised LGBT supporters’ group in the country.

The group’s aim is to promote the inclusion of LGBT supporters, while challenging discrimination.

And its success so far has led to the group being invited to lead workshops at tomorrow’s national #PrideInFootball event in London.

The free event is funded by campaigning organisations Kick It Out and Football V Homophobia and aims to develop more LGBT fan groups.

Di Cunningham, one of the organisers of Proud Canaries said: “It’s a privilege to be asked to deliver part of #PrideInFootball and a tribute to our club and fans – Norwich City Football Club are ahead of the game in acting on prejudice and hate in the stands.”

And, as a thank you for helping lead the workshops, the Football Association has given the Proud Canaries tickets to today’s Euro 2016 qualifier between England and Slovenia at Wembley.

The group will hang the Proud Canaries banner, alongside those of Canal Street Blues (Manchester City), Proud Lilywhites (Tottenham) and Gay Gooners (Arsenal) to drive home the message that there is no place for homophobia in football.

Stephen Fry is the honorary president of Proud Canaries, while Amal Fashanu, the niece of former Norwich City star Justin Fashanu - the only professional footballer to have come out as gay while still playing - is a patron.
