A county councillor is striding out to raise funds for two struggling local charities.

Norfolk County Councillor Paul Morse is walking 15 miles from North Walsham to Walcott in aid of Kickz and Walcott Emergency Volunteers Association (WEVA).

He hopes to raise more than £1,000 to split between the two charities and is appealing for sponsors.

KICKZ is a youth club in North Walsham which meets at the sports centre three nights a week. It has nearly 500 registered members with between 40 and 50 attending most sessions. It has been successful in reducing anti-social behaviour and is in danger of closing because of lack of funds.

WEVA is the flood wardens organisation in Walcott. The volunteers work in difficult conditions to monitor the risk of flooding from the sea, warn residents of impending floods and provide support to the community in emergencies.

“It is important to draw attention to these two very worthwhile causes,” said Mr Morse. “Kickz is one of the few remaining places for young people to go in North Walsham and it is struggling for funding.

“I know how highly regarded the flood wardens are by the community in Walcott and I know how much time they spend. When we are all asleep they are out checking on circumstances and warning people and helping them to evacuate if necessary, as they did in November 2011.”

Mr Morse, who is a keen walker, will be completing the route with his wife Sue on July 15. The couple will leave North Walsham at 7am and arrive at The Lighthouse in Walcott at around 1.30pm, where the WEVA fun day will be taking place. Mr Morse will also be taking a turn in the village stocks during the event at 2pm.

  • Please explain to me your walk, as I cannot work out how North Walsham to Walcott can be 15miles

  • Well done Paul Morse and Mrs Morse. Will be donating the £25 that I would have spent on my Conservative Party membership this year. When are we going to hear from Tory Councillors doing the same? Perhaps Mr and Mrs Murphy could cycle from their present divisions in West Norfolk to what they hope will be their new divisions in South Norfolk and see how much money they raise.
