After watching her training in the gym it is hard to believe she was bedridden and close to death.

But in 2008 Mary Craske, 42, from Cromer Road, North Walsham, could not move or communicate after being struck with ME, which causes chronic fatigue.

Her weight fell to six stone and she had no muscle on her, but this Saturday she will be making her debut as a cage fighter in Norwich.

Ms Craske, a mother-of-three, said: “I went downhill following the death of my parents. It had quite a major impact and I ended up bedridden and in a vegetative state. It was like I had locked-in syndrome because I was aware of things but I couldn’t open my eyes or even go to the toilet. My body shut down.”

She added she could hardly breath at times.

Ms Craske had a successful career as a contract supervisor for a waste disposal company and a lively social life before she became ill.

But after being bedridden for eight months she said she was like the “living dead”.

Ms Craske, who is now a manager, received a three-day treatment called the lightning process. This process claims to help modify the brain’s thought patterns to reduce the release of adrenaline, believed to trigger ME.

Following the treatment Ms Craske could walk and in 2011 she started training in Mixed Martial Arts at the Oriental Arts Centre, Norwich.

Eight months ago she moved to Fighting Fit Martial Arts in Cromer and is now eight and a half stone.

She said: “Never in a million years did I think I would be fighting in a competition.”

Her amateur fight against a Great Yarmouth woman will be held at the Open youth venue on Bank Plain. Doors open at 5pm and the first fight will be at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £25, £35 or £50.
