A popular heritage steam gala weekend will be without one of its star locomotives after a last minute decision by Network Rail which left organisers “devastated”.

The Sir Nigel Gresley, built in 1937, was expected to be the star of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) event in Sheringham between March 7-9.

It was due to travel from Norwich to Sheringham but Network Rail told gala organisers on Thursday the locomotive could not travel on that section of track because of “weight restrictions”.

NNR general manager Trevor Eady said: “We are devastated. To find a replacement a week before is proving difficult. We hope to find something because we need the extra engine to make the gala extra special.”

Network Rail was approached for a comment but had not responded by the time the EDP went to press.

The gala, which attracts thousands of people, is continuing and will feature five locomotives if a replacement is not found.
