A writer from Norfolk has taken the bold leap into the world of self-publishing in a bid to see his dream of becoming a professional writer come true.
After writing a blog for more than a year, Norwich-based teacher and former Sheringham High School and Sixth Form student, Ryan Pugh, decided to gather his musings together to create his first book, Amusements.
The 30-year-old described the book as a selection of essays on life, art, culture and nineties nostalgia.
Branding it a “bedside book”, Mr Pugh added: “It is a book you can dip in and out of to entertain and inform you as the chapters are nice and short. You do not know what is coming next because there were no restraints on me when I wrote it.
“My goal is always to make people laugh and be happy.”
Mr Pugh works as a music business and English teacher at Access to Music Norwich, in the city centre, and has always wanted to write professionally. “But I’ve never found quite the right format,” he said.
“I like writing scripts and novels but I’ve never had the patience to stick with it.
“I’ve always had these fleeting thoughts, though, as everyone does, but artists probably find these thoughts more fascinating. With my blog there are no restrictions and no limitations on what I can do.”
Mr Pugh used the website CreateSpace, an Amazon company, to create Amusements and said he believed this type of “vanity publishing” would be the next step forward in the world of self-publishing.
He said: “Vanity publishing is a risk. With this way I am able to print on demand by uploading my work.”
Amusements is available to buy from the Norwich and Cromer branches of Jarrolds, Holt Bookshop and Katie’s Gifts and Accessories in Sheringham or via Amazon.co.uk.
