Dave Fletcher - aka Fat Bloke on a Moped

The 20-stone 41-year-old David Fletcher does not look like your typical Easy Rider on his 125cc L-plated moped.

But he is set to encounter some wild adventures when he rides around the coast of mainland Britain to raise money for Keeping Abreast, which supports women with breast cancer.

His fund-raising is inspired by his wife Claire, 39, who, in February last year, had cancer cells forming on her breasts.

She is now clear of cancer but is facing another year’s worth of reconstruction treatment after a double masectomy.

Mr Fletcher featured in the EDP last year when he circumnavigated Norfolk on his moped in September, raising £3,116.12, and has become a local celebrity in his home village of Southery, near Downham Market.

He has his own website and his friend Kevin Rooney, 18, will be riding a moped with him throughout the journey.

Mr Fletcher said: “This will be a massive challenge. I’ve only been riding for eight or nine months. I’ll be riding with L plates because I don’t have a moped licence.

“We will stick as close to the coast as possible. It will be very windy and because of my size it will be difficult for me to keep balance.

“It also takes me about 25 seconds to get from nought to 60 and me and Kevin will have to formulate some kind of sign language to communicate with each other on the way round as we work out where we are going.

“We also don’t know where we will be sleeping from night to night so if anyone out there knows somebody who could put us up for a night, I’d really appreciate them getting in touch.

“When I think about all of these problems I wonder how we are going to manage it.”

Mr Fletcher will be setting off from the car park of The Old White Bell pub, in Southery, on June 25 and plans to be in Edinburgh by day three, Durness, on the north tip of Scotland by day six, Stranraer by day nine, Holyhead by day 12, Cardiff by day 14, before heading around the south coast and getting to Southend by day 19, then to Great Yarmouth and home by July 16.

Mrs Fletcher said: “After what I’ve been through, it is really great to see David doing something to help other people who will find themselves in the same situation that I have been in.”

Mr Fletcher said his inspiration for Fat Bloke on a Moped came from the books All at Sea, by Tim Fitzhigham, who rode from France to England and back in a bath, Three Men and a Float, by Dan Kieran and Ian Vince, about three men who drove a milk float across Britain and Round Ireland with a Fridge, by Tony Hawkes, who hitch hiked around Ireland carrying a fridge.

He said: “I needed something people will easily remember and Fat Bloke on a Moped came about after some talk in the pub. I hope it will help me raise lots of money and it could be used for fund-raising challenges that I may take on in the future.”
