Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner has pushed for more information from the force following a rise in reports of violence in care homes.

But Stephen Bett was reassured there was not a “sudden upsurge in serious violent crime” after a public meeting at Cromer’s North Norfolk District Council headquarters today when he questioned Norfolk Police assistant chief constable Sarah Hamlin.

Mr Bett who lead the Police Accountability Panel, which holds police chiefs to account, said: “We are dealing with complex issues. We are dealing with a new recording system dealing with more third party recorded crimes.

“Violent crime ranges from two children pushing one another in the playground to murder. What I’m looking for is to get the police to characterise what violent crime has taken place.

“I feel there is no great concern. The police have reassured me today we are not dealing with a sudden upsurge in violent crime.”

The meeting heard there had been a “significant increase” in reports of violence at care homes in King’s Lynn, North Norfolk and Broadland.

It also heard an increase in violence, which varied in severity, of more than 25pc at Great Yarmouth and Norwich was due to the night time economy but officers were taking steps to prevent serious offences.

Mr Bett was reassured Norfolk remained a safe county and said more people were reporting crimes because they felt more confident in the police.
