A Norfolk MP has vowed to re-ignite the fight to save RAF Marham once parliament restarts today.
The threat of closure still hangs over the west Norfolk RAF base, with the Ministry of Defence yet to conclude its Strategic Defence and Security Review, which could see three RAF flying bases closed.
But last night Elizabeth Truss, MP for South West Norfolk, said she would keep battling alongside Make it Marham campaigners to ensure the county keeps its Tornado fleet.
She said: “As soon as parliament starts up again I will continue to reiterate the case to keep RAF Marham open in the House of Commons. I am also hoping to set up a meeting with Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the treasury, to put forward the financial argument to save the base.”
Ms Truss, whose constituency includes RAF Marham, added: “The logical decision is to keep the base here in Norfolk for strategic and economical reasons.” Ms Truss added the MoD has informed her that no decision had been made about which RAF bases would close and that the decision would be made in the spring.
The fight to save Norfolk’s last flying base united MPs, councils, businesses and communities across the county in November under the Make it Marham banner. The campaign, supported by the EDP, then peaked at the end of the month as a delegation travelled to 10 Downing Street to deliver a petition with nearly 37,000 signatures.
The rallying cry from the Conservative MP comes a month after the EDP revealed air force chiefs told defence secretary Liam Fox to keep Marham as the main home of the RAF’s Tornado fleet and axe RAF Leuchars, in Scotland, instead.
