From a quiet backstreet of Norwich, it has given more than a million pounds to local community groups and projects since it was started five years ago by a generous benefactor.

Now, the Norfolk Community Foundation is looking forward to helping people in its next five years after a glittering birthday celebration.

The organisation, which awards grants from money given by businesses and individuals in donations and wills, held an event at Norwich's historic Dragon Hall last night to celebrate its fifth birthday and thank its donors, supporters, patrons and community partners.

Graham Tuttle, director of the foundation, said: "The Norfolk Community Foundation is a very vibrant organisation that has, through the generosity of its donors, supported over 600 registered charities and community groups since its inception and there are a number of milestones to celebrate this year. Firstly, we have now given out well over a £1m in grants since 2005. The Norfolk 100 and its members will this year have raised over £500,000 for immediate grant giving and for the development of a permanent endowment that will support charities and community groups long into the future. And, finally, we can also celebrate our fifth birthday and look forward to many more."
