It must rank as one of the most unusual of sporting clashes, but a women's cricket team from a small Norfolk village which has played just three competitive matches, is to take on the finest female cricketers in Germany.

The game will be something of a prestige fixture for Topcroft Cricket Club's women's team, which was set up less than a year ago, following interest from mothers, wives and girlfriends of some of the male players.

The team only started playing competitively in April and the only kit available to the players is the boys' under-17s outfits.

Yet despite this, the women, who range in age from 14 to their 50s, jumped at the chance, when offered, of hosting the German All Stars – who are on a tour of the country.

David Reeder, one of the coaches for the women's team, said: 'The German All Stars are quite a big name to be playing against because it's not just a local town or village, it's players from all over Germany.'

The Topcroft women have spent the last few months training and playing in an indoor women's league, but started playing competitively in the outdoor league in the spring.

Lisa Waters, whose son and daughter both play cricket for Topcroft, said: 'It is great for us to not only be cheering on our children, but to have our children cheering us on at the women's matches too.

'We are all a bit nervous because we are new to the game and a very long way off their standard but we are looking forward to it and just want to enjoy the day.'

The team will take on the German All Stars on Saturday from 1pm at Topcroft Playing Field.

The All Stars will also be facing Lowestoft Town's women's team and the Norfolk women's team during their visit.

The Topcroft women are also looking to attract a sponsor. Anyone interested in joining or sponsoring can email Mr Reeder at david.reeder@hotmail.co.uk
