Heritage officials are searching for an “outstanding individual” who can encourage the thousands of visitors using Norwich’s museums to spend more money.

The Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, which operates 10 attractions including Norwich Castle, the Bridewell Museum and Strangers’ Hall, is looking to employ their first commercial manager.

Councillors have previously encouraged the position to be created in an attempt to raise more money for the Norfolk-wide service at a time when funding is stretched.

The successful applicant will be paid between £37,941 and £41,421 a year, with the contract lasting until March 2015. Arts Council England funding will pay for the position.

No appointment is expected to be made until after a group of councillors investigating the future of the museums service report back their findings. It is believed this will be completed by November.

Vanessa Trevelyan, head of Norfolk’s museums service, said: “We want somebody with a fresh perspective and we want to build on what we’ve already done. But I think there are ways we are not exploiting assets in the ways we could do.

“With any commercial activity, although we want to earn as much as we can in a suitable way, one of the things we have always taken into account is the best way to get money into services is to get grants.”

Mrs Trevelyan said this included the £1.4m a year Arts Council grant, a figure in excess of the amount generated by the museum service’s shops and cafes.

She said, once costs have been taken into consideration, the cafes generate £30,000 a year while shops have a surplus of £45,000.
