Like Norfolk's own X-Files, the so-called 'Scole Experiment' has become infamous amongst followers of unusual happenings.

Now Grant and Jane Solomon, who wrote a book about the strange events, have turned the story into a screenplay that has been lodged with the Writers' Guild of America and is being presented to film production companies and read by actors.

'We have written the screenplay with Hollywood producer Rory Rooney,' said Mr Solomon. 'He asked us to do it because it would have taken another screenwriter a long time to just get up to speed on the vast amount of Scole information and the concepts involved.

'The story is a fiction based on our book. The two-hour film format requires amalgamation of characters and a storyline that will hopefully entertain as well as inform an audience.'

The strange story dates back to 1993 when psychic researchers Sandra and Robin Foy joined forces with another husband and wife duo, mediums Diana and Alan Bennett, to form the Scole Experiment Group, to try to find scientific evidence for a link between the living and the dead.

Beneath the Foy's 17th century farmhouse in the south Norfolk village of Scole – in a cellar nicknamed 'the Scole hole', the couples began to hold séances in pitch darkness.

Amongst the unusual occurrences they claimed to experience were dancing lights, the sound of ringing bells and objects appearing and hovering in mid-air. The claims attracted criticism from those who suggested that the group's insistence on complete darkness invited suspicion.

But they were later joined by members of the Society for Psychical Research and the Norfolk sittings were extended to include other experiments in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and California.

Mr Solomon said: 'We have maintained contact with the Scole Group and have their agreement to use all the material for the film.

'The current description is supernatural mystery thriller however we're well aware that once various producers, directors, other screenwriters, and actors get to look at and have input into a script the whole thing can change enormously. But we think almost everything about the Scole story would make a great film.'
