The man at the helm of the London 2012 Games has been made a Companion of Honour.

Seb Coe

Born: September 29, 1956

Career: A double Olympic Champion and 12-time world record holder in athletics. He won gold in the 1,500m and silver in the 800m at both the Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984 Games. He retired from competitive athletics in 1990 and became a Conservative MP and Private Secretary to William Hague.

Peerage: He was made a peer in 2002 and is Lord Coe of Ranmore. He received a knighthood in the 2006 New Years Honours List.

Seb Coe, who was chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, is given the title in the New Years Honours.

The Companion of Honour is given for a major contribution to the arts, science, medicine, or government lasting over a long period of time.

Lord Coe took the London 2012 bid to Singapore, and then chaired the organisation responsible for putting on the Games.

He was recently appointed chairman of the British Olympic Association.
