Stephen Went, a former Bungay mayor and town reeve, polled 580 in the by-election last night, while Bob Prior, the only other person standing for the single seat vacancy, polled 252.

The turn out for the election was 21.34 per cent.

Mr Went, who has lived in Bungay all his life, was previously a member of the town council for 12 years from 1995, and was mayor in 1998-99. He is also a member of Bungay Town Trust.

Mr Went works for an insurance broker in Ipswich. In the town he is a trustee of the Fisher Theatre and a member of the Bungay Theatre Group, as well as being treasurer of Holy Trinity Church.

He said: “I am delighted to be back on the town council and would like to thank all those who took time to vote for me. There has been a lot of bad feeling in the town recently regarding the one way system but I hope that everyone will now pull together and promote the town and its assets at every opportunity.”

Polling stations were held at two venues in the town and were open from 7am to 10pm yesterday.
