Proposals for a new quarry near Wymondham have been given the green light.

Permission was granted on January 10 for a mineral extraction plant to be built in Stanfield Road, near Wymondham.

An initial application from Longwater Gravel was withdrawn in 2011 and resubmitted in early 2013 and people living nearby formed a protest group, Silfield and Stanfield Homes Action Group, opposing the site.

Adrian Gent, a retired GP who lives in Silfield Street, said: “Consent was granted by delegated powers and it did not go to a committee meeting. No one was able to go along and speak, but we did object on paper.”

The quarry is expected to operate for about 12 years.

Bosses at Longwater Gravel, which also has sites in Horstead, Costessey and Coxford, near Fakenham, said that five jobs were likely to be created as a result.

They also held a consultation with local residents last year, which saw them modify their plans to move the access.

Dr Gent said he was concerned about the increase in traffic along the road which was used by dog walkers, joggers and horse riders.

“It’s a fast road. Silfield Street and Bridge Road will become much busier. The roads can be very slippery.

“Wymondham needs these areas for people to jog and cycle. They need to get out and about and Wymondham has a growing population.

“This rural area is becoming quite industrialised.”
