Fans of the film Coyote Ugly will know what to expect at the new Kings pub in central Norwich.

The King Street pub reopened yesterday and new manager Laura Bird said its theme was based on the hit US movie from 2000.

That does not mean there will be girls dancing on the bar, as per the film - the ceiling’s not high enough - but Miss Bird said the mood and atmosphere would be based on a fun bar.

The 23-year-old former Wymondham High school pupil has been travelling around the world for the past three years, but decided to come home to take on her first job as a front of house pub manager. She has previous experience working as a waitress at Breckland Lodge, off the A11.

She is confident the newly revamped pub, which boasts an impressive outside seating area at the back, will be a success.

There will be a barbecue every weekend and a bar outside and they also have Sky and BT Sports.

She said: “I’m really excited and cannot wait for it to get going. We have got a good team here with 15 staff. It’s a fun bar. “It’s all about people having fun and dancing. We also have two real ales on tap and lots of boutique beer from Belgium.”

The pub won’t be open during the day from Monday to Thursday, but they are hoping to get a lot of Norwich City fans visiting on match days.

The pub is owned by Funbars Ltd, which is run by Declan Lohan and Linda Morgan, They said it’s been totally refurbished and they have spent a lot of money on it. “It will be a bar for everyone,” they said.

The pub has been closed since the departure of its previous landlords earlier in the year. They had been the victims of a homophobic attack last December. The pub was originally called the Nags Head, but it has also been known as Tusks and Barrio. It was named Kings in 2002.

The Evening News has been urging people to return to pubs in our Love your Local campaign.

  • Such a shame that it didn't continue as a running concern. This pub was the BEST pub in norwich before it got taken over. It served great food, bad fantastic staff, and brilliant events. It was the best LGBT+ friendly pub in norwich... you could be whoever you wanted to be, there was folk music one night, drag queens the next! I just can't see a cyote ugly bar meeting the bar set by Davie and Jesse!

  • Another Glitter Dome. Well worth avoiding. Prisoner of War Road area is so short of these unthemed theme `pubs`. Such fun. Not.

  • Hah! So, basically, it's not actually going to be anything like Coyote Ugly... Nor could it ever be because it was a FILM!! Still, I wish you well with it and hope at the very least that there might be some sort of open mic type night there? At least that would be a little "Coyote Ugly". Kings was Awesome in the mid 2000s when Elliot use to run it. It was a true oasis in the middle of all the other bars in and around TomblandPoW area which were (and still are) filled with the pretentious people of this world... However, my hunch is that it's now going to end up just as bad as those bars and the same clientèle... I'll stick to my local real ale boozer I think!

  • Basically it's the same thing as before. Just with a lick of paint and new decor! Nothing like a pub in my eyes? Just another trendy barclub.

  • Sounds like the headline referring to Coyote Ugly got some peoples imagination going wild there for a minute. I still prefer the traditional boozer myself, being a bit old fashioned as I am, but I still wish Laura all the best. Lovely dress you're wearing there by the way.

  • In the days of pubs and businesses closing down, it nice to see a drinking establishment opening up, regardless of type or whether it fits into the 'Tradition British Pub' mould. Perhaps that's why so many do close, as people are moving away from pubs, and prefer the more exciting places for a night out? Appreciate people love to troll and hate, but check the place out first, and then give them and us your valuable opinions.

  • "....There will be a barbecue every weekend and a bar outside and they also have Sky and BT Sports" Really? Wow so what you are saying is its going to be the same as any other bog standard UK city pub and. No bar dancing, no drinking games, no high risk antics ... actually it has no real link to Coyote Ugly other than in your heads.

  • It's the landlord and the other customers who make a "local", not the decor.

  • Funny how there's no Companies House trace of "Funbars Ltd". "Fun Bars Limited", yes, but with different people in charge. Still, nice free publicity.

  • Sounds more like a nightclub than a pub, with the opening hours. Best of luck though, just please don't call it a pub.

  • I acknowledge the Evening News has been asking people to return to pubs, but this isn't a pub in the truest sense is it? Its a so called "fun-bar" whatever that is. The concept isn't a new one as there are now dozens of these tawdry places situated on Prince of Wales Road.

  • Yeah, just what Norwich needs, another awful cocktail bar where 40 something divorcee females can get plastered before throwing up in an alleyway down Prince of Wales Road. Ever since the Nags Head closed this place has got progressively worse with every incarnation. I give it 3 months before it's shut down due to fighting, breach of licencing law, lack of money or a combination of all these things. Whatever happened to proper pubs that served proper beer?

  • So will this new bar that is like Coyote Ugly but not, have drinking contests?? If they are like Coyote Ugly but not with the dancing, presumably they stick to the other concepts that made the chain of Coyote Ugly famous in America. Drinking irresponsibly, fire breathing. Singing, dancing & shouting barmaids.

  • "It's like Coyote Ugly, but it's not" 1st rule of business - know your product. It is eitheror, not sort of! I wish Laura Bird the best of luck, there is a big step between waitressing and FoHPub manager.

  • So a "pub" that's only opens at night for most of the week? Don't you call that a "nightclub" in all but name and licensing application.
