Marks & Spencer (M&S) is opening its first M&S Simply Food store on Sweet Briar Retail Park, in the north of the city, later this month.

The 16,150sq ft store, based in the former Allied Carpets store, will stock up to 5,000 food and drink products and boasts an in-store bakery, a beers, wines and spirits shop and a 50-seat café.

It will also stock greeting cards, take party food orders and offers a service for people ordering clothes on the internet to pick-up them up in store.

Simon Rossiter, store manager, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing the very best of M&S food to Norwich later this month in what is our first M&S Simply Food opening in Norfolk.

“We’re confident that our quality offering will appeal to locals, as well as those living in the surrounding areas.

“We believe the new M&S Simply Food is a great addition to Sweet Briar Retail Park and we are especially pleased to be creating so many jobs in the area.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming our new customers into M&S Simply Food and seeing all we have to offer.”

The store will open at 10am on Wednesday, July 23 when Mr Rossiter and the 100 employees will cut a ribbon to officially mark the opening.

M&S Simply Food Sweet Briar Norwich will be open between 8am and 8pm on Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays, with free parking available at the retail park.

  • I look forward to the day when there is a return to the Butchers The Bakers The Green Grocers and so on in the centre of Norwich with business rates and rents lowered to allow this progression

  • Agree with blue tractor. Needed to be south of the city. Terribly congested that area of town. Such a pity.

  • Located on the outer ring road. Motorists are to blame for the doughnut effect - for instance Motor City Detroit USA or the now fire ravaged Fakenham town centre. M&S will now have two stores. I do not expect a third south of the City with ASDA and Morrisons to join Harford Tesco.

  • Good idea, prob secured cheap rental on the empty unit for a good period of time. Could be an experiment to try and tap into the asda customer base. Also handy for people knocking off work who travel home that way. I'll still stick to waitrose(mainly because I'm a retired partner and can get discount) in my opinion I can't see m&s closing in the city they have a good customer base and spent a few million recently on refurbishment. Also m&s prob own that store and outright after obtaining it from woolworths all them years ago.

  • Well M&S fashions used to be good, and their food is passable these days! I suspect this is a long term move to shut the city centre shop due to astronomical rates, and the council's war on the motorist! This is a well known phenomenon, the "doughnut "effect where city centres turn into retail wastelands and everyone shops on the outskirts,or of course the internet! I give Norwich another 5 years before the rot really sets in,it has happened elsewhere, and Norwich is not immune from it!

  • I thought your taste buds become less sensitive past the age of 70? But no doubt they'll sell plenty of 'soft' food.

  • My thoughts exactly blue tractor. I live in south. Norfolk and would have travelled to their food store if intact it was located perhaps at Longwater ( which I know is always congested). But I don't think being located round such a congested section of the ring road will entice people to go there. I will still shop with Waitrose online I think. I wish M&S did an online service as good as them and door dropped.

  • No jobs are ever created when a new supermarket opens, they just take business from other supermarkets who cut hours and stop recruiting or cause the smaller local shops to call it a day.

  • It would be nice for M&S to open a similar store on the east coast or expand the stores they have there. All we ever get are the left overs that no one else wants.

  • Well that's a testament to the number of people who don't know what good food really tastes like and have got more money than sense. Not even M&S wines stand out as being anything special.
