A leisure centre in Hethersett has celebrated the opening of a new extension and at the same time is helping the environment.
Fitness Express was founded 26 years ago by two entrepreneurs, Steve Taylor and Dave Courteen, and the leisure club at Park Farm was officially opened in December 1991.
The club celebrated its 21st birthday by opening an extension which features a new spa pool.
In addition the swimming pool hall has also been refurbished as part of the project. The work has also involved providing a carbon neutral biomass boiler system to heat not only the leisure club and swimming pool but also the hotel.
Richard Bond, Park Farm general manager, said: “The latest additions are part of our ongoing development at Park Farm and we are proud to be helping the environment as well as providing first class facilities.”
Fitness Express currently has 30 clubs and 14 spa facilities throughout the country including Newcastle, Manchester, Southampton, East Anglia and London.
“We are proud that the company started in Norfolk. We are still a Norwich based company with our headquarters at Park Farm in Hethersett. We currently employ 400 people and at Park Farm have about 1,000 members,” company director Steve Taylor said.
One of those members, Les King from Wymondham, was on hand to cut the tape to officially open the new extension on Friday. “I am honoured to be asked to open the new area,” he said.
Nearly 3,000 people have supported a Facebook campaign demanding safety improvements on the A47 near Dereham set up after the latest fatal crash.
