Visitors to Downham Grange stepped back into the 1950s on Saturday during the care home’s open day.

Staff donned clothes from the rock and roll era for the unveiling of the Clackclose Road home’s retro activities lounge.

Peter Barlow, manager of the Kingsley Healthcare run home, said: “The open day was a great success, I showed more than 30 people around the home during the afternoon.”

The new lounge, full of items from the era, is designed to bring back memories for its residents, some of whom are living with dementia.

Mr Barlow said: “Staff combed auctions and bric-a-brac shops to find suitable old gramophones, records and radios. We also put up vintage pictures.”

He said encouraging reminiscence was an important way of bringing back precious memories to people living with dementia.

Anyone willing to donate memorabilia is asked to call Mr Barlow on 01366 387054.
