Superstore bosses have revealed that a new Aldi superstore in Norwich is due to open next month.

The discount supermarket chain was given permission for a store on part of the car park in Hall Road retail park in Norwich last year, to the annoyance of their rivals.

The new store, close to Pets At Home, has been taking shape since last autumn and customers will soon be welcomed through the doors.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: 'We are looking forward to opening our new store on Hall Road to customers this May. We'll share more details on the exact opening date and times in the coming weeks.'

The new store will create 50 jobs.

The decision to grant permission for Aldi's fourth store in Norwich was made by the city council's planning committee in December 2015,

But bosses at Asda, which had opened its Harford Place superstore just a month before Aldi was granted its permission, had urged members of the committee urging them to block their rival's application.

Asda's legal advisors sent a four-page document warning Aldi's proposed new 1,693 metres square store could have a 'significant adverse retail impact' on the Hall Road district centre development, including Asda.

But Aldi's agent hit back, urging councillors not to give Asda's opposition 'undue weight', given it was 'an entirely commercial objection'.

City council officers had been on the brink of using delegated powers to grant Aldi permission, meaning it would not have to be discussed by councillors, before Asda's late objection.

But city councillors unanimously approved the new store, with Green city councillor Paul Neale saying if Asda 'didn't like the heat, they should get out of the kitchen'.

Aldi already has stores in Larkman Lane, Plumstead Road and Sprowston Road.

As well as the Hall Road store, another Aldi is planned for Drayton Road at the former Topps Tiles site.
