A Norfolk farm which played a vital role during the Second World War is set to become one of the county’s newest wedding venues.
During the Second World War, Potash Farm, in Hethel near Wymondham, played host to American forces stationed in the county with the 389th Bomb Group of the United States Air Force.
Now, more than 70 years after the friendly invasion, the farm is giving engaged couples and their wedding guests the chance to invade the farm for their special day and add to the location’s long history.
Inspired by their own wedding held on the site in 2015, husband and wife team Michael and Michelle Howlett have decided to set up Country Girl Weddings and Events, diversifying the family farm and transforming it into a private, rural wedding venue.
Mr Howlett, 39, said: “Farming has changed dramatically over the years. Farmers are diversifying land in many different ways. It’s a must if we are to keep the UK’s food and crop industries alive.
“Hosting wedding receptions on our family’s land was my wife’s idea after we had our wedding here nearly three years ago”.
Surrounded by historic woodland and wild flowers, the farm offers have five acres of grassland for couples to create the countryside wedding of their dreams.
Mrs Howlett, 34, said: “It’s all inspired by our wedding. It was beautiful and private. We had a large marquee and danced the night away.
“Now we have an excellent opportunity to share the land with others to create their very own country wedding reception.
“DIY weddings are becoming very popular and it is important to us that couples are given the freedom to explore their ideas.”
Already receiving bookings for wedding receptions this year and next, the farm will host its first open day on Sunday, April 15.
Couples and their friends will be able to visit the farm, meet Mr and Mrs Howlett and talk to some of the Norfolk’s finest wedding suppliers, including a marquee and tipi company, cake baker, photographer, DJ, outside catering firm and bar plus many more.
