A restaurant which has been closed for more than three years has reopened with a new look, new chefs and a new way of dining.

After the Japanese restaurant at Chameleon House in Harleston closed in 2009, owners Peter and Ginni Ashken have been running a bed and breakfast at the property, refurbishing the restaurant and looking for the right chef to run it.

Finally, the restaurant in Redenhall Road reopened on Thursday with chefs Martin Recchi, 33, who previously worked at Brasted’s, and Jack Gosling, 23, who recently returned from working as a chef in Australia, in place.

Mr Recchi said: “I’ve travelled a lot and lived in different places around the world and take my inspiration from that.

“We want to get away from the conventional ‘starter, main, pud’ idea. Instead, we offer people a selection of smaller plates so they can enjoy a variety of flavours and walk away feeling satisfied rather than just stuffed.”

Mr Ashken said the dream that he and his wife had set out to achieve when they bought and renovated the rundown Tudor and Georgian building in 1996 was entering its third and final stage: as Chameleon House Restaurant With Rooms.

“It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride – it hasn’t been easy – but this is where we wanted to be,” he said.

“We hope to appeal to a broad cross-section of people, and having the rooms means that, instead of getting a taxi, people can have a meal, then stay the night and return home the next morning.

“We’re also open for coffee in the mornings and for drinks from the bar in the evening. So everyone is welcome to call in for a drink and experience the ambience of the new Chameleon House.”

Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 2.30pm and 6.30pm till late.
