A new café has opened its doors in the pavilion of a park in the north of the Norwich.
Park Britannia can now be found at Waterloo Park, in Angel Road, and it is the third café to be opened by Britannia Enterprises, the social enterprise which helps to rehabilitate serving low-risk prisoners or ex-offenders by giving them the opportunity to undertake valuable work experience.
The new café is following in the footsteps of Café Britannia, at the former Britannia Barracks on Mousehold Heath, and Bistro Britannia, in Norwich’s historic Guildhall.
Park Britannia has now given a new lease of life to Waterloo Park’s Grade II-listed pavilion which until this month had been shut for more than a decade.
Britannia Enterprises, with the help of a grant from Norwich City Council, has refurbished the building, including fixing its leaking roof and making a feature of the venue’s sunflower ceiling which has also been incorporated into the new café’s brightly coloured logo.
The work done to the building has also in turn helped Britannia Enterprises to extend the range of training opportunities that it can offer offenders.
Britannia Enterprises chief executive Davina Tanner said she was delighted by what had been achieved and that there were also further exciting plans in the pipeline for the future of the pavilion which was built between 1929 and 1933.
She said: “We are so proud of what we have achieved with the pavilion building.
“The feedback that we have had from customers who have visited Park Britannia has been fantastic.
“We really do hope that the community will enjoy meeting and eating here.
“With the café now open we will finish work on the second-floor function room.
“It is stunning - light and airy, with a wonderful view over the park and flanked either side by balconies, this room will make a wonderful wedding venue – and that is exactly what we have planned for it. Watch this space.”
Park Britannia is now open Monday to Sunday, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, hot drinks and ice creams.
This half-term Park Britannia is also offering free activities for families including treasure trails.
