James Aggett has been announced as the new manager of Beccles Public Hall.

The 27-year-old, who moved to the town last year has been volunteering at the venue for the past few months and is keen to get to grips with his new career.

Mr Aggett has previous experience in the industry having worked in a community hall in London and front of house for a theatre company.

But the role is quite a departure from his degree in outdoor activities, leadership and coaching and his former job as a teaching assistant.

He said: “My wife is a live-in carer up here and we moved up at the end of September. I had been looking for a job and I came to volunteer as I wanted to get out of the house.

“I have had experience with various aspects of the job, so I hope to add to the amazing work the directors do.”

Mr Aggett has a range of ideas for the hall, but wants to focus on attracting more youth involvement.

“We don’t just want to put on things for children and teenagers, we want them to come and be able to perform. I’m a big believer in if there’s nothing on you want to see come and do it.”

Beccles Public Hall has been running for four years this month as a community-owned hall and theatre.

Sue Bergin, events co-ordinator said: “With a new general manager in place we feel we have a positive future to look forward to. We see the role of the manager building on the important support and good will that we have achieved to date with the community groups and performing professionals.”

On Friday, February 17, the Science Boffin’s will be visiting the hall, there’s professional wrestling on Saturday, February 18, and Beccles Friends of Cancer Research UK will serve up breakfasts at a fundraising morning on Friday, February 24.

Kent DuChaine and Leadbessie are back with support band Owl and Wolves on Saturday, February 25.

• The 18th edition of the hall’s what’s on programme will be out on March 13.
