A new creative hub for artists has opened in the centre of Norwich.
The upper floors of the old Hovells shop in Bedford Street have been transformed into the new Norwich Art Studios project.
The venture is the idea of Tom Potter who also runs Space Studios in Swan Lane and The Rub in Upper St Giles.
Mr Potter, 40, who is renting the upper floors of the property from the Butcher Group on a 12-year lease, said: “The building is full of character and it’s a really interesting space. You have got these slightly separate zones within one large environment.
“The vision of the project is for it to be an interactive creative community.
“The idea is that people work side by side on whatever their creative projects are. A lot of people went to art school and that is what they had there, and then when they leave art school they end up working in their spare room.”
Mr Potter said there were up to 30 open plan spaces in five connected zones over three levels, and he said there had been a great response to the project so far – with half the spaces already filled.
Photographers, graphic design companies, textile makers and fine artists are among those who have taken up residence at the studios.
The building, on the corner of Bedford Street and Bridewell Alley, is best known for its links to furniture company Hovells which traded there for many years. Clothing store Just Add Water was also based at the site and, more recently, Boutique Fusions traded there before closing in June this year.
Norwich Art Studios spaces are £20-£50 per week. Anybody interested in renting a space should email Mr Potter at email@example.com or call 07588 731731. For more about the studios visit www.norwichartstudios.com
