At the time of the two explosions, the Norwich City striker was on the pavement outside the terminal of Zaventem Airport. He was on his way to the Democratic Republic of Congo to play for the national team against Angola.

'I was close to the taxi drivers,' he told Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure. 'My wife was near the trucks, a few steps from the explosion.'

He said that if they had entered the airport sooner 'we would be dead'.

'It was my wife who saved our lives,' he said. 'I wanted to get there earlier, but she said 'Let's wait for Nathan Kabasele (a relative who plays De Graafschap) who was taking the same flight. She told me he was coming in a minute or two. It is a miracle.'

He added: 'When the attack happened, I was sitting down, and then I ran to my wife and fled to the Sheraton and then to the parking lot. I left my seven suitcases where they were. A taxi driver followed me with three suitcases the other four were returned to me at home on Wednesday.'

The striker, who is on loan from Dynamo Kiev, then saw the injured entered the hotel car park.

'They came to the parking lot,' he said. 'There was even an Anderlecht supporter who, despite his serious knee injury, came to me to tell me how he was a fan of me. That touched me.'

The former Anderlecht player said he was 'very close' to the dead. 'I remained calm, at the time, to comfort my wife who was hysterical,' he said. 'When I got home, I went to get my boy from school and kissed him.'

He told the Belgian newspaper he would still play for Congo on March 26 against Angloa if the coach and country needed him.

'I can't believe I witnessed scenes that you only see in the movies,' he added.
