Sarah Mills from Taverham won the title after completing a 1000 piece puzzle in under two hours.

Mrs Mills, who lives in Thorpe Marriott, competed in the second annual event held as part of St Mary’s Jigsaw Festival in Newmarket

Her 118 minute victory unseated the previous UK champion Emma Jenkinson, who finished in second place this year, with a time of 135 minutes.

The 33 year old who works as a pricing consultant at Aviva, said: “My dad heard about the competition on the radio last year and told me I had to enter as I used to do a lot of puzzles before I became a mum.

Tips from champion

Start with looking for the blocks of colour in the picture.

After you have pieced together those sections, fill in the space around.

Leave the really hard bits like sections of sky until last.

Contrary to popular thought, Sarah never starts with the edges first.

“Puzzles don’t really go with a baby, I do them now to relax in the evening.”

The puzzle, which featured a difficult arch, was part of Renato Casaro’s 100 years of film and was provided by sponsors Coiledspring Games for all the competitors to race to compete.

Rachael Wyatt, Marketing Manager of Coiledspring Games said: “I’ve done most of the puzzles in the Schmidt collection so I was pleased when the jigsaw festival organisers chose this one, as it’s one of my favourites. I’m totally in awe of Sarah for completing it so quickly”

Despite practicing timing herself at home, the mother confessed she had never done as well as she did on the day of the competition.

The winning puzzle is on display at St Mary’s Jigsaw festival which runs until July, 17.
