Norfolk could become the home of one of the country’s fastest growing sports after a national event flew out of the traps.

Thetford Forest was abuzz with cries of “mush!” and the scurry of sleds as it hosted the British Sleddog Sports Federation (BSSF) and International Federation of Sleddog Sports (ISSF) World Cup event on the weekend.

The event saw more than 240 competitors descend on the King’s Forest area, taking part in 14 different sled categories ranging from one to eight dog events.

The top performers had the chance to qualify for the Great Britain Sleddog team as it competes in the European Dryland Championships in France this December.

The forest has become the venue of choice for the hi-octane sport, with its smooth trails and easily accessible location making it a perfect fit.

Leigh Marsden, organiser and competitor, said the forest had the ideal attributes for sleddog racing.

“It’s an outstanding place to hold the event and the weekend couldn’t have gone better.

“The races are on dry land, rather than snow, and the conditions here are just right. With the position of Thetford and the type of trails here, it couldn’t be better.

“I can see it becoming the UK home for these qualifiers for years to come,” he said.

Stuart Wright, mayor of Thetford, was on hand for the event to present to the winners.

He said he hoped the event would remain in Thetford.

“It was a pleasure to attend the event and present the medals to the competitors. The sport is taking great steps forward and the Thetford event was cited as having the best trails in the country,” he said.

“It is events such as this that provide a boost to the local tourism industry and raises Thetford’s profile from a national and international perspective.”
